Sound Enhanced Series (SES) by StoutWorks

Ordering:  StoutWorks Sound Enhanced Series marimba mallets are made to sell through this website and PayPal. I have also added Zelle (email me first please) as a possibility for payment.   Once an order is paid for, I will then make them.  If there are a lot of orders, there may be a waiting period to make and ship your mallets.  I can only make 3-5 sets per week.  Each mallet is completely made and wrapped by hand, and tested by Gordon Stout.

PayPal.  A standard Shipping charge is automatically included in the PayPal cart when you check out.  There may be additional shipping charges for order outside of the US.  If you are from New York state, sales tax is included in the price of the mallets.  When checking out, make sure to include your email address - I will then write you to discuss handle finish, yarn and thread color options.

Handles.  All StoutWorks marimba mallets are made with arrow shaft grade cedar.  Cedar is a softer wood than the normal birch, and is therefore more flexible (closer to rattan), having a great feel in the hands.  Since it is a softer wood, it is never recommended that you play with these mallets on the ends of the bars, on vibraphone, or any percussion instruments.  The SES 1N,  SES 2R handles are the standard birch thickness and length.  The SES 1L mallets have a larger and thicker handle.  They are all designed for "normal" marimba performance.  They come in four difference finishes:

1. natural wood, sanded, no finish.

2.  natural wood, sanded, poly finish (two coats).

3.  sanded, light colored stain, poly finish.

4.  sanded, dark colored stain, poly finish.

You choose the option you prefer.

Cores.  The SES 1N,  SES 1L mallets have a polyester plastic core, fabricated by Doug DeMorrow.  They are covered with two thin layers of latex rubber, and then with adhesive backed surgical grade felt.  The SES 2R has a rosewood core, made from rosewood pieces from the undercuts of the marimba bars, and with a brass insert added for weight (the same as the orchestral bell mallets made by DeMorrow).

Yarn/Hardness..  They are all wrapped with a yarn that consists of 60% Fine Superwash Merino wool, 20% Mulberry silk, and 20% Polyamide.  The SES 1N, SES 1L and SES 2R are always graduated in hardness:  #1, softest(yellow tape), for the bass.  #2/3 slightly harder, as a pair(blue tape).  #4, slightly harder (red tape).  The graduation in hardness is smooth from stick to stick.  The best example to compare the hardness of these mallets is to the old Malletech signature models of mine (now sold as Grand Soloist mallets):  GS7 was the softest.  The middle two mallets were GS 13's, and the top mallet was the GS 16. There are similar differences in hardness here, meaning the softest can be used in most of the upper register.  The middle two will work top to bottom on a 5.0 marimba, not too hard on the bottom, and not too soft on the top.  The top mallet gets slightly bright in the bottom register, but gets a clear and focused upper register sound.

You will be able to choose the color of yarn and thread you prefer.  I will send you a picture of the yarns I currently have.

Thread.  The SES 1N, 1L, 2R mallets are sown with a waxed nylon thread.  You will be able to choose the color you prefer. I will send you a picture of the colors I currently have.
